Pala's Favourite! The Chateau Laurier is only a few steps from the Parliament Buildings and a short walk from the Ottawa Convention Centre, National Art Gallery and the spectacular Museum of Civilization. Grand Trunk Railways commissioned the Chateau to be built in a French Gothic design. Construction was completed by Garth & Co of Montreal, who used granite blocks, light buff limestone, white Italian marble and copper for the roof. Other points of interest in the design of the hotel include: $4.5 million worth of antiques; Travertine Marble staircase with brass railing; Czechoslovakian crystal and an art deco pool.

In 1941, a cornerstone of Ottawas hospitality scene was established - the Lord Elgin Hotel. It was named after the Right Honourable James Bruce, the earl of Elgin and governor general of British North America. The 12 storey structure, with its normandy type copper roof and totally reconstructed in 1991, is a clean cut modern adaptation of the french chateau type. The trim and molded courses are of limestone derived from 2 distinct regions of Ontario and Quebec giving a more elegant color texture to the facade surface.
