The Ananga Ranga by Kalyana MallaTranslation by Richard F. Burton
Like its great predecessor the Kama Sutra, the
Ananga Ranga celebrates the joys
of a healthy sexuality. Both these extraordinary works stress that lovemaking is an art and a science
worthy of study by all. Written in India during the sixteenth century, the Ananga Ranga details ways of
understanding men and women, particularly their sexual desires, so that partners may please
each other for years and years and thus have a happy married life.
Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) first introduced the Ananga Ranga to the western world in 1885. Together with Foster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot (1833-1901) he translated both the Kama Sutra (1883) and the Ananga Ranga from the original Sanskrit and published them for private circulation through the Kama Shastra Society, an association they had founded in 1876. These were the first ancient Hindu treatises on the art of love to be translated into the English language, but they were so controversial that they could not be officially published in England until the mid 1960s.
