This enlargement of the prostate is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). • Hypertension: L-arginine is required for the body to synthesize nitric oxide, which enables the arterial system to retain its youthful elasticity, thus alleviating hypertension in some people. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is the most abundant steroid hormone in the body. It is also one of the most significant age-related biomarkers, which predictably declines with age in even the healthiest of people. DHEA levels drop significantly in men and women after age 35.

 

 

Abnormally low levels of DHEA have been reported to be related to a number of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, coronary artery disease, obesity, and Alzheimers. Supplemental DHEA has been reported in study after study to have immunoregulatory, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-obesity and anti-stress activity, and to be involved in the prevention of atherosclerosis, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, Alzheimers disease and multiple sclerosis.

This controversy stems from the much-speculated possibility that DHEA could aggravate conditions of prostate enlargement and prostate cancer, based on the belief that DHEA is converted in the body into testosterone, and that testosterone, and/or its metabolite, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) causes or worsens BPH and prostate cancer.

 

Conventional medical wisdom holds that both prostatic hypertrophy and prostate cancer are due to or are promoted by testosterone and/or dihydrotestosterone. Consequently, standard medical therapy for these conditions includes blocking dihydrotestosterone formation by drugs, avoiding testosterone replacement, or (in the case of prostate cancer) orchiectomy (surgical removal of the testicles).

 

However, according to Dr. Ward Dean Ref #13, "I am not yet convinced that testosterone is necessarily the bad guy. For example, it is clear that testosterone, like DHEA, drops progressively with age in both men and women. Consequently, it does not seem logical to me that diseases which increase in incidence with age are caused by a hormone that progressively decreases with age. Dr. William Campbell Douglass, a pioneer in alternative medicine, agrees with me that: . . . testosterone has been proven to be protective against cancer . . . it has been suggested that testosterone is contraindicated in men with cancer of the prostate. In view of the hormones protective effect in other cancers, I doubt the validity of this supposition." Dr. Dean also points out the many physicians now believe that testosterone deficiency rather than excess DHT is a major causative factor of BPH and many actually use testosterone to treat BPH!

 

Furthermore, Dr. Dean points out that studies actually show DHEA supplementation increases testosterone in women, but very little in men. We conclude therefore that DHEA will not act as an aphrodisiac by boosting libido or improving erection, but it does provide a significant anti-aging effect which definitely helps with lovemaking!

 

We recommend that DHEA be taken once daily in the morning to mimic the body's normal rhythm. Recommended Dosage: 25 to 100 mg for men. Product Cautions: Men with prostate cancer or elevated PSAs should use DHEA under physician's supervision.
