"In bed her heavy resilient hair - a living censer, like a sachet - released its animal perfume, and from discarded underclothes still fervent with her sacred body's form, there rose a scent of fir." Baudelaire"Scents are surer than sights and sounds to make your heartstrings crack." Rudyard Kipling
"Most people believe that their reactions to others are dominated by the visual, auditory, or kinesthetic senses. In actuality, the sense of smell is the strongest tie to most emotional experiences." Cynthia Watson, M.D.
Every woman knows from either instruction, instinct, or experience, that scent conveys a subliminal invitation to sexual pleasure." Cynthia Watson, M.D.
"Pheromones also trigger the desire to mate.. It appears that a woman's pheromones incite a couple to make love." Cynthia Watson, M.D.
What do pheromones do?
Pheromones are chemicals naturally produced by all humans. We use these chemicals to communicate on a subconscious level with one another. They are detected and transmitted to the hypothalamus part of the brain by a small organ in the nose known as the VNO.
"Double-blind testing confirmed effectiveness for 73 percent of the pheromone users." GQ - Gentlemen's Quarterly, June 1997
For Women
"Pheromones are the source of the 'chemistry' between two people who are instantly attracted to each other without knowing why...Most people are unaware of pheromones; the passions they arouse begin on a subconscious level. We may be convinced that any number of other factors are the source of the attraction we feel to someone, when instead we are being bewitched by his or her unique sexual scent.
Female pheromones also apparently operate as powerful aphrodisiacs. Winnifred B. Cutler, Ph.D., a renowned biologist and author, conducted a double-blind experiment in which young women were exposed to either female pheromones or a placebo. During the first three weeks of the test, 36 percent of those receiving the pheromones reported having weekly sex, while only 11 percent of those on the placebo did so. Between the fourth and fourteenth week, the discrepancy became even greater: Seventy-three percent of women exposed to the pheromones were now having sex on a weekly basis, while the figure for those on the placebo remained at 11 percent." Love Potions, Cynthia Mervis Watson, M.D., pp. 43-46
For Men
Whereas hormones influence internal organs and tissues, pheromones are external agents. They don't affect the person who secretes them, but rather the person who smells them. This is incredibly important to a man's sense of self-esteem. If he feels desired, his capacity for sexual performance is magnified tremendously. Pheromones cause women to sexually desire a man. A man, just like a woman, wants to be desired!
The Results of a Survey Involving Male Users of Pheromones
An independent survey was conducted by the Sydney research organization, Bennett Research, into the use of pheromones. Research based on the survey yielded quite remarkable results. There were, altogether, 306 male respondents who took part in the surveys.
Of the 306 men, 275, or 90%, claimed that the products increased their attractiveness to women. Nearly 3 men in 10 made the assertion that their appeal was increased by some 60%.
In the survey of the pheromone users, 11% stated that their attractiveness to women had increased by between 80 and 100%. 18% of the surveyed pheromone users said that their attractiveness had gone up between 60 and 70%. 25% said their attractiveness increased by between 40 and 59% and a further 18% claimed an increase in attractiveness in the range between 20 and 39%.
So how was the response by women to the men wearing sex pheromones gauged?
The survey showed an increased response through the following:
- making conversation - 61%
- starting up a conversation - 52%
- expressing an interest in them - 43%
- being responsive to them - 40%
- paying the man concerned unsolicited compliments - 36%
- outright flirting - 34%.
Furthermore, there was one highly significant development in the survey... a notable increase in physical response by women to the men who wore pheromones. 31% of men surveyed reported that women deliberately brushed against them. 30% said that they were touched by women, although there was no mention of where. 18% were sexually stimulated by being in the proximity of the respondents who wore the pheromone spray, 17% of respondents reported women expressing a desire to make love to them and 16% said that they indeed made love.
A man in the 35 - 40 age group in the survey described what happened to him: "One night in a bar a woman walked past me and looked at me. The second time she walked past she came straight to me, said hello, started talking to me and I was very surprised when she grabbed hold of my hands and gave me a kiss on the lips..."
Another respondent in the same age group noted that spraying his correspondence, by which he meant a letter, a photo, or card, has brought: "amazing and intimate replies from a number of girls".
A Queensland man in the 25 to 34 age group describes what happened when a saleswoman called at his door: "she invited herself in, forgot what she was selling and went after me".
A man in the 25 to 34 age group reported that he was singled out in a crowded hotel bar.
The pheromones appear to be effective for men in all age groups.
A man in the 55 plus group wrote: "when they got near me they say I don't know what it is about you. Whenever I get close to you I want to do it and I don't know what it is. There is something about you that really gets me going".
Many men in the survey reported overt sexual behavior towards them by women they met. A man in the 55 plus group reported women: "showing their legs up to the thigh and leaning down to reveal their breasts".
Another wrote: "they just love to rub the most private part of their body against mine".
A common experience of men in the survey was being approached by previously unknown women, as reported by a man in the 35 to 44 age group from Western Australia: "women I have never seen in my life would walk up to me and start talking".
Here is the report of another experiment involving pheromones from Oxford University.
DO PHEROMONES GET THE GIRL? There's no more depressing feeling for a single lad than to wake up on January 2nd having failed to score at all over the entire Christmas period or worst, the previous year. All those parties, all those babes, all those 'might-have-beens'. To avoid such disappointment in 1999, the less confident amongst you might consider using pheromones going into the millenium. But do they work? MAXIM sat in on an Oxford Student Radio experiment to find out once and for all!
The experiment:
To take place over two consecutive Wednesdays at the same venues using the same chat-up lines. One week the volunteers wore a pheromone, the other a placebo, but they didn't know which they were wearing at the time. On both nights the volunteers wore the same clothes, ate the same food and drank the same quantities of the same drinks. To render the experiment completely objective, each was accompanied by a minder who nominated the chat-up line and, as important, the person who was subjected to it.
The Pheromone:
A male pheromone (designed to attract women), smells like cologne. The placebo was cologne.
Scoring:
Points were awarded for response to the volunteers' approaches: positive points for a positive response, negative ones for a haddock round the cheek. A mild positive response such as a smile got 10 points, while leaving with someone scored the full 100 points (and some hot action). On the downside, being ignored lost you only 10 points, but being thrown out and barred earned you a hefty maximum fine of 100 points.
Results:
Total scores for all four volunteers, followed by the improvement the pheromone made on their scoring action:

How and why to pheromones work?
Pheromones are real, but they are in a baffling way, "invisible." You can't smell them in the ordinary way you smell perfume or sweat. But once your subconscious becomes aware of them, you will almost certainly react and respond to the presence of pheromones. It has been well documented that human pheromones can trigger powerful sexual responses in women or men.
One enduring mystery of pheromones is that if they are undetectable by the human sense of smell, how can humans be influenced by them? The answer, some researchers believe, is that pheromones may be detected by the same nerve cells in the nose used to detect odor, or perhaps by another structure in the nose called the vomeronasal organ.
"Body odors are one of nature's most potent aphrodisiacs... those imperceptible fragrances called pheromones... which cannot be perceived consciously, are as unique to each individual as his or her fingerprints." (Watson, M.D., p. 43) Pheromones are the reason why a perfume or cologne smells uniquely different on each person.
"The sense of smell is controlled by the limbic system, one of the innermost parts of the forebrain. This system is a 'mini-brain' that handles emotions, behavior, appetites and some memory functions... The most basic sensations - hunger, fright, rage, joy, love, hate, sexual arousal - are moderated by the limbic brain...Whereas the sensations of sight, sound, and touch must cross many synapses to reach the limbic core of the brain, the sense of smell is the most direct link to the limbic center. Because of this close connection between the nose and limbic system, people may unknowingly make a decision to either embrace or retreat from an experience based on olfactory information." Love Potions, Cynthia Mervis Watson, M.D., pp. 45-46
"Human pheromones become active at puberty. Like hormones, they are secreted by glands and circulated in the bloodstream...pheromones are produced by the apocrine glands in the armpit and around the genitals, where underarm and pubic hair is designed to trap the odor. They can also be smelled around the nipples, face, and on the soles of the feet." (Watson, p. 43)
