Mickey Hart's band is Planet Drum. He was the drummer for The Grateful Dead for almost thirty years. "Music is a mystery," he rhapsodizes. "Music is also what makes us human. It's like sex and love. It's one thing that we do share. It's not a luxury, it's a necessity really. ... This is magic, this is the stuff of dreams. This is the great alchemy of life..."

After two tentative singles, their version of the Northern Soul camp club classic Tainted Love went to Number 1 and Soft Cell became pop stars. Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981) contains that hit, the great tawdry romance of Say Hello Wave Goodbye, the self-explanatory Bedsitter and the even more self-explanatory Sex Dwarf. It's a resilient piece of 1980s pop, all wild-eyed conviction and great melodies. Jimmy Nicol

"Temptation" is a tour de force that succeeds on many levels: the brilliant writing of Tom Waits, the minimal and gorgeous production of Craig Street, and, predominantly, the interpretive genius and innovation of Holly Cole:.. sparse instrumentation, dark vocal inflections, and more mood than any other jazz singer would ever be able to conjure.... Her dark, octave-layered vocal on the title track is also dead on; the hypnotic track plays like a soundtrack for any situation in which you find yourself doing something you probably shouldn't...with a half-smile on your face all the while. Perfectly complimented by Craig Street's organic production, "Temptation" finds Holly in her darkly seductive, minimalist glory. Challenge yourself to find a more unique vocalist or stronger artistic statement, and you will be kept very busy indeed. .

"I'm Your Man," from beginning to end is one the most enlightening musical voyages you will ever take. Lyrics have always been Cohen's strong point but now we have a maturity in the music itself, laced with just enough pop/rock licks and tricks. His voice is at its masculine best to match the penetrating lyrical epeditions.A long-time fan

Osho's Kundalini and Dynamic Active Meditations
Osho Active Meditation (Series)
Music by Deuter
One of Osho’s brilliant insights was that modern people needed a different approach to meditation, an active one rather than a quiet passive one. In his active meditations you use body movement and sound to help you go out of your head (transcend thinking) and get into your body (be aware of direct sensory information and emotions/feeling). There are 28 meditations in the series. Our two favorites are the Kundalini and Dynamic meditations with fabulous music by Deuter.
The Silbeys have created magical music, an inspired celebratory 'enigma-tic' frequency, that offers a new vision for daily living.
Tara Fellner, Associate Editor, Whole Life Times, Los Angeles, California, November 1999: "These two really know how to have a good time, and they want to inspire their listeners to do the same... the joyful spirit of fun is alive and well in everything they do. "
Great background music for Meditation and relaxation !! I teach beginning Meditation and this is perfect background music to help my class relax. The way the music blends into one another, makes it a wonderful tool for creative visualization journeys. A "centred" Listener

In keeping with the title, Love Songs captures Miles Davis at his romantic best. These cuts were culled from classic studio dates (and one concert) recorded between 1957 and 1964, and the intimate sound of Davis's trumpet unifies the nine poignant ballads chosen for this loving compilation. Whether leading one of his many quintets or performing in front of a jazz orchestra, Miles was the master of confidential moods. With tasteful accompaniment and wonderful compositions, this Miles Davis collection is straight from the heart. Mitch Myers

When Pala wants some tunes to take her out of a world of speed and pressure and into a space of clarity, tenderness and romance this is one of the CDs she choses.
"One of many Miles cds dedicated to his ballad playing, this one is a nice example of Miles at his lyrical best. Highlights include "Circle," (from "Miles Smiles") "Old Folks," (from "Someday My Prince Will Come") and the sombre "Blue In Green." (from "Kind of Blue"). A nice cross section of Miles at various points in his career and a good introduction to his lyrical mastery." A Fan

Coltrane's silvery sound brought an utterly new dimension to tenor saxophone balladry, a metallic clarity in which each note is given its own luster and nuance. Listening to these ballads gathered together, Coltrane seems to touch on every mood of romance, from longing to rapture to reflection, imbuing each song with an ineffable grace. His theme statements are sublimely beautiful, while his improvisations add new depths with their unique mix of strength and delicacy.

Getting Spiritual With Sinead O'Connor by Scott Wilson/Pitch Weekly
Having secured a deal with Atlantic for serious money, Sinead O'Connor earns every penny with "Faith and Courage," a circular collection of material that mostly abandons her tiresome scabrousness in favor of romance and spirituality. O'Connor uses Faith and Courage to become the female Van Morrison, a cranky recluse serving two masters, God and music, with the same muse. Far from being purely a Christian act, though, O'Connor retains some not-so-Catholic notions in her work, such as goddesses and mysticism.
Her luscious alto has the depth and texture of a great tenor saxophonist, but Cassandra Wilson's defining asset is a post-modern song sense that enables her to surf through Son House, Neil Young, Johnny Mercer, Billie Holiday, and (gasp!) the Monkees in pursuit of strong songs that can provide that instrument with a canvas. Her second Blue Note album extends Wilson's seductive pilgrimage beyond the conventions of jazz repertoire and accompaniment, yet it's her instincts as a jazz singer that inform these brilliant readings. The settings again step away from traditional small group jazz (for starters, there's no piano) to evoke the emotional core of these songs. Anyone who can turn the Monkees' "Last Train To Clarksville" into a slow-burning erotic vignette deserves your attention. Sam Sutherland

Time After Time, is James' husky version of some pop standards. In the liner notes, James acknowledges learning these songs from vocal models like Washington, Fitzgerald, Etta Jones, Jimmy Scott, Chet Baker, and Frank Sinatra, but James puts her own stamp on every one. Most of these are confessions of weakness by a lover in the throes of new infatuation or fresh heartbreak, but she injects such a feeling of strength into the vocals--both in the robustness of her timbre and in the determination of her attitude--that she gives these well-worn numbers a new spin. She may be dizzy right now, she seems to imply, but she will soon land on her feet. Geoffrey Himes

Moondance is that rare rock album where the band has buffed the arrangements to perfection, and where the sax solos instead of the guitar. The band puts out a jazzy shuffle on "Moondance" and plays it soulful on "These Dreams of You." The album includes both Morrison's most romantic ballad ("Crazy Love") and his most haunting ("Into the Mystic"). "And It Stoned Me" rolled off Morrison's tongue like a favorite fable, while "Caravan" told a tale full of emotional intrigue. Moondance stood out in the rock world of 1970 like a grownup in a kiddie matinee. Twenty-eight years later, it's still a marvelous night for a Moondance. John Milward

Lena Horne is nine years older than the 70-something Tony Bennett, and like him has lost a good bit of power and tone from her voice. Unlike Bennett, though, she doesn't try to bull her way through her vocal limits on We'll Be Together Again; she stays within those limits and fashions a striking testament to the subtleties of romance and friendship in one's autumnal years. Billy Strayhorn was one of Horne's very best off-stage friends, and seven of the 16 tracks here were written by Strayhorn and/or his partner Duke Ellington. Three more songs--"My Buddy," "Old Friend" and the title tune--are heartfelt remembrances of those once dearest to Horne and now gone--Strayhorn, her ex-husband, her son, her hairdresser and her wardrobe mistress.. It's a masterpiece. The cover portrait suggests the mood of late-night desolation almost as effectively as the music, with Sinatra in the corner, smoking a solitary cigarette on a deserted street illuminated only by a foggy, blue- green glow of lamplight. Loneliness, thy name is Frank! They say that memories of Ava Gardner caused him to break down after finishing this aching version of "When Your Lover Has Gone." Riddle's clarinet theme for "What is this Thing Called Love?" is as haunting as Cole Porter's melody itself. And if there's a more devastating evocation of solitude than "It Never Entered My Mind"... well it must be on Only the Lonely. With songs like "I'll Be Around" and "Dancing on the Ceiling" to suggest at least the hope of hope, Wee Small Hours may flirt with despair, but never succumbs to it. It's the kind of comforting company that misery likes best. Jim Emerson

So smooth is Frank here, so sleek, so in-command that you can almost hear the Brylcream oozing through your speakers. The Capitol Years were some of THE years for Mr. Sinatra, and the way he wraps his lips around classics like "Night & Day" "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Witchcraft" is almost indecent. Grab a scotch, light a cigarette and thrill to Frank at the height (one of many) of his lyrical best.

From the evocative cover painting to the impeccably-chosen songs within, this 1965 album harkens back to Sinatra's great Capitol-era concept albums like In The Wee Small Hours and Frank Sinatra Sings For Only the Lonely. The theme revolves around a man approaching his fifties, looking back with a mixture of nostalgia, regret, and uncertainty; given Sinatra's age at the time (he was 49 when this was recorded) and the way he invests himself in the material, it's impossible to interpret the record as anything but autobiographical. Wistful numbers like "Don't Wait Too Long," "It Was A Very Good Year," "September Song," and the title track all hit the emotional bull's eye, but everything here is excellent. Unquestionably his finest Reprise-era achievement. Dan Epstein

Released in 1959, this was one of Sinatra's most commercially successful albums, remaining on the charts well into 1961. The reason for its popularity is apparent upon first spin: track for track, this is probably the enjoyably upbeat album Sinatra ever recorded. Billy May's arrangements swing unbelievably hard (the horn section positively leaps out from the speakers), and the Chairman himself is at the top of his vocal form on "Something's Gotta Give," "Cheek to Cheek," "Dancing in the Dark" and nine others. This is Sinatra at the very height of his artistic peak. The CD throws in four extra tracks of almost equal stature to the standing selections. Dan Epstein

Look past the tacky, sad-clown velvet painting on the cover (a Grammy- winner for album design in 1959!), there's nothing cheap or sentimental about this record--the bleakest and blackest album of popular songs ever recorded, so quietly powerful it can leave you slumped in your chair with the ice cubes still rattling in your glass. Every single "suicide song" (as Sinatra liked to call 'em) on Only the Lonely is a stunner that will take your breath away. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are like shadows, almost colorless and motionless, so that all you hear is the ache in the singer's voice. "Angel Eyes" and "One for My Baby" each deserve an album to themselves-- so exquisitely moving that at the end of three minutes you feel like you've just heard a lifetime of loneliness. My only regret--and it's a big one--is that this flawless masterpiece doesn't include Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life," which truly belongs here; Sinatra put it into an already overcrowded recording schedule and, when fatigue and the difficulty of the song defeated him after a couple takes, he gave up and never attempted it again. We got the chillingly lovely "Willow Weep For Me" instead, so I'm really not complaining--but that just adds to the pang of loss that this album expresses so vividly. Drink up! Jim Emerson

Pop this on, close your eyes, and you'll be instantly transported back to the Vegas of 1966. The Sands Hotel was still the "class joint" where Sinatra and his Rat Pack buddies partied, held court, and occasionally even performed. This priceless document (Sinatra's first official live album) captures the Chairman of the Board in performance mode, ably supported by conductor/arranger Quincy Jones and Count Basie and his Orchestra. The set list comprises 16 Sinatra classics--including "Come Fly With Me," "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "Angel Eyes"--along with two Basie instrumentals and some seriously un-P.C. stage banter. Essential. Dan Epstein

Each song on this 96-cut collection is wonderful. And the Capitol years were when Sinatra's fullest voice was used on material by the best (Arlen, Porter, Van Heusen, Cahn, Styne). But a purist will miss the narrative that was so special in the original albums. Records such as This is Sinatra, Songs for Swingin' Lovers, and Only the Lonely were among the first concept in pop music. If you're used to hearing "Three Coins in the Fountain" after "I've Got the World on a String," this relatively random cornucopia--though full of great music--will not leave you feeling as satisfied as the old LPs. This is a fine primer for newcomers, but you should't miss the tracks that never became singles, including such classics as "Pennies From Heaven" and "Old Devil Moon." Karen Croft
