Consider a hologram as an analogy to help understand this concept. Holography is a photographic method in which light from three different sources is reflected from an object onto a surface, capturing the image in three dimensions. When light is shone through that recorded image, a lifelike object appears—it may seem as if a real person were standing before you. If you cut the original recorded image in half and shine the light through it, you still get the full image. In other words, each part of the image, however small, contains one hundred percent of the whole image.
Because we are in bodily form, we perceive the world as dual and use dualistic concepts to help us understand its nature. So in Tantric practice, although everything is God, Shiva and Shakti are pictured as its masculine and feminine aspects. Shiva is fundamental, unchanging consciousness and Shakti is the creative face of this consciousness, the energy of life. During Tantric lovemaking, lovers become the god and goddess, Shiva and Shakti, and in their union reconnect with the essential Self. In a sense, you remember who you really are. Tantric rituals and ceremonies help you to transcend the limited perception of self as separate individual and to reunite with everything. You aren’t just a two dimensional, flat photo, you’re the holographic all.
With all Tantric ceremonies and rituals, it is most important that you cultivate a state of consciousness characterized by love, adoration, and worship. You surrender to your highest Self and open to welcome an infusion of bliss as you remember that you are Shiva/Shakti. You can enhance any ceremonial practice by abstaining from sexual intercourse for one or more days beforehand. Fasting will also heighten your awareness and receptivity to the cosmic energy. The longer the preparation period of sexual abstinence and fasting, the more intense your ritual will be. Historically, Tantric practitioners also use intoxicating substances to enhance their experience. They also employ earthly materials in their rituals as symbols of divine qualities.
Tantric rituals generally involve the preparation of a sacred space, bathing, relaxing the body, clearing the mind with meditation and slow, deep breathing, sending out evil and inviting in love, focusing on the ultimate purpose of the ritual (union with Shiva/Shakti), and giving thanks to each other for honoring god and goddess in this manner.
