The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana

Translation by Richard F. Burton

The Kama Sutra is one of the world's most celebrated love manuals of all time. Written about 350 CE by the sage Vatsyayana, it's a guide not only for sexual technique and intercourse positions, although it has plenty of those, but also for all kinds of relationships between men and women. Now you can see for yourself the wisdom these ancient words have for modern lovers.

Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) first introduced the Kama Sutra to the western world in 1883. Together with Foster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot (1833-1901) he translated both the Kama Sutra and the Ananga Ranga (1885) from the original Sanskrit and published them for private circulation through the Kama Shastra Society, an association they had founded in 1876. These were the first ancient Hindu treatises on the art of love to be translated into the English language, but they were so controversial that they could not be officially published in England until the mid 1960s. Today, we offer you the full version of the Burton translation no matter where you live.
